Academic an Evgenii Velikhov, French scientist Robert Aymar and Japanese scientist Yoshikawa Masaji won the prize for developing the foundation for building the International Thermonuclear Reactor (ITER).
As of 2003 the Global Energy prize has been awarded annually for outstanding theoretical, experimental and applied research, development, innovations and discoveries in the fields of energy and power generation.
The international award committee includes 30 major scientists from nine countries, and more than 600 member of the scientific community have the right to put forward nominees.
