One of the main areas of focus during the talks was on economic cooperation, first and foremost in the fields of energy, the environment, and the ore mining industry. Dmitry Medvedev emphasised that the number of major joint projects between the two nations will grow and announced the creation of a Russian-Venezuelan bank with four billion dollars in authorised capital, which will support such projects and encourage reciprocal trade.

The President of Russia stated that the set of documents signed by the two leaders was unprecedented. Mr Medvedev highlighted that the signed documents would bring stability to the relations between Russia and Venezuela for years to come.

Dmitry Medvedev also expressed gratitude to the President of Venezuela for his decision to recognize Abkhazia and South Ossetia’s independence. He emphasised that Russia had never pushed anyone to recognise these states, but that Russia is nevertheless invested in their fate.
