The First Lady laid a wreath at the monument to the founder of St Petersburg, Peter the Great, — the Bronze Horseman.
The ceremony was also attended by Governor of St Petersburg Valentina Matviyenko, President of the Constitutional Court Valery Zorkin and court judges, Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Northwestern Federal District Ilya Klebanov, officials of St Petersburg city administration and city parliament.
Svetlana Medvedeva and Valentina Matviyenko took part in the opening in the Petrogradsky district of a sports and fitness centre on the premises of orphanage No. 23.
